New order for 108-metre Windfarm Support Vessel

Piet Brouwer electrotechnology has received a new assignment from CIG Shipbuilding (formerly Shipkits) for a new Windfarm Support Vessel, called Orion. The brief specifies a length of 108 metres, and the project is to be built by CIG on behalf of Acta Marine, a subsidiary of dredging company Van Oord. Piet Brouwer electrotechnology will fit the electrical system onboard Orion and supply the diesel-electric propulsion.

Orion is designed for work on wind farms and offers comfortable accommodation and workspace for 75 persons onboard. Quality engineering of the hull and construction will ensure that the vessel is highly seaworthy, even in rough seas. Orion will have two levels below decks and space above the hatches on the upper deck for containers of 10, 20 or 40 feet. The vessel will be equipped with two dedicated boat landings for Crew Transfer Vessels as well as a motion-compensated gangway, which allows a safe and efficient transfer of technicians and equipment between the vessel and wind turbines.

Van Oord will deploy the ship in the construction of the wind farm Gemini, which is being realised 85 km north of Groningen Province, and should be fully operational in 2017. A total of 150 wind turbines will be placed here, divided into two adjacent parks – hence the name of the park, which means ‘twins’.

Piet Brouwer electrotechnology will take care of the design, engineering and delivery of the complete electrical system, including the diesel electric propulsion. The latter will be designed and delivered in partnership with D&A Electric from Ridderkerk. Piet Brouwer’s panel builders are already busy building the main and distribution panels. Software engineers from Marble Automation, a subsidiary of Piet Brouwer electrotechnology, have started programming the comprehensive alarm and control system. The hull will be built in Poland, followed by completion and finishing in Harlingen. The vessel will be operational in September 2015.

The management of Piet Brouwer electrotechnology is proud of this major new assignment, which demonstrates the robustness of the market and the company’s sterling reputation.

Piet Brouwer electrotechnology is a global specialist in turnkey electrical engineering for marine installations on both commercial vessels and yachts. When building, refitting or retrofitting any type of vessel, it is ideal to have a single experienced partner for the entire electrical system. Piet Brouwer electrotechnology is a true one-stop shop, and provides a comprehensive package that consists of the design and installation of the electrical system, as well as of the monitoring, control and navigation & communication equipment. Moreover, the company ensures that the onboard technology catches the eye primarily by being invisible – the systems are reliable and do their job quietly.
